Best Clarinet Reeds for Beginners: My Top 2 Picks

With so many brands, cuts, and strengths of clarinet reeds available, choosing the right reeds for your beginning clarinet student can feel overwhelming.
The good news? It doesn't have to be.
After teaching hundreds of beginning clarinet students over the past 15+ years, I've found two reeds that consistently work well for most beginners. While no reed is perfect for every player or every mouthpiece, these are the ones I recommend most often.
Best Clarinet Reeds for Beginners
What are the the best clarinet reeds for beginners? If you just want the short answer, here it is:
You really can't go wrong with either one.
Vandoren Traditional 2 1/2
If a parent asks me which reeds to buy without giving me any other information, this is usually my answer.
The Vandoren Traditional reeds (the classic blue box) have been the standard for decades. They produce a reliable sound, are fairly consistent from reed to reed, and are the brand most band directors expect students to use.
For almost every beginning student, I recommend Strength 2½.
D'Addario Organic Reserve 2 1/2
Recently, many of my beginning clarinet students have had great success with D'Addario Organic Reserve reeds.
They have an easy response, work well with most mouthpieces, and are made from organically grown cane. If that's important to you, they're an excellent option.
Like the Vandoren reeds, I recommend Strength 2½ for most beginners.
As I'm writing this, both of these brands cost a little over $30 for a box of 10, making them a good value.
Don't Forget a Reed Case
No matter which reeds you choose, I highly recommend buying a reed case.
A good reed case keeps several reeds flat, protects them from breaking, and helps them last longer. It's one of the simplest ways to get more life out of every box of reeds.
There are plenty of expensive reed cases on the market, but this affordable reed guard is the one I recommend most often.
